Leadership is far more than a position or promotion given to someone. I believe that a leader does far more than assign tasks and tick off a list of key performance indicators (KPI’s). A good leader leaves their team members better people than started and the team achieving wonderful results. I have complied a list of seven traits I believe good leaders possess.
1. Honesty and Integrity
A team functions best when people are accountable for their actions and can rely on one another. This takes honesty and integrity, and how can a leader expect that from their team if they don’t demonstrate the same qualities themselves?.
Team members are more likely to come on the journey if their leader shows confidence. Displaying confidence will grow more confidence within the team. Beware of appearing over confident or appearing arrogant. Few people like arrogance and this can be very damaging to a team.
3. Inspires Others
It can be very difficult for a leader to persuade others to follow. The best way a leader can inspire others is by setting a good example. When things become difficult it is important to remain calm. Staying positive in difficult times will also earn respect and improve motivation.
4. Commitment and Passion
Your team will look up to you when you demonstrate your commitment and passion. When you lead by example and get your hands dirty the team will likely give it their best shot. If your team doubts your commitment or passion it will be a very difficult team to motivate.
5. Good Communicator
It is imperative for a leader to clearly communicate the vision, as well as the strategy to achieve the goal. A good communicator can be a good leader. Remember that words have the power to motivate, as well as the power to do great harm. Communicate clearly and carefully.
6. Decision Making Capabilities
Apart from a futuristic vision, leaders also need to make timely decisions. A leader needs to carefully consider their decisions and be willing to stand by them. Most leaders make decisions on their own. For major decisions I recommend consulting key stakeholders, they will also benefit or suffer from your decisions.
A good leader shows they are accountable for their actions and must also hold their team members accountable for what they do. When a team member makes an error or struggles work with them to improve. Importantly, remember to acknowledge the successes of the team and team members.
